Social media video formats: 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1?
Updated 24 October
In short
Use 9:16 (vertical) for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and stories; 1:1 (square) for LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and X feeds; and 16:9 (landscape) for YouTube, your website and Product Hunt. Bragr renders your launch video in each of these three formats.
Vertical 9:16 (1080 × 1920)
The full-screen format of a phone held upright. It fills the whole screen and suits short content.
- Instagram Reels and stories
- TikTok
- YouTube Shorts
- Facebook stories
Square 1:1 (1080 × 1080)
A square takes more room than a landscape video in a feed, on mobile and desktop alike. It's a good all-round choice for posts.
- LinkedIn feed
- Instagram and Facebook feed
- Posts on X
Landscape 16:9 (1920 × 1080)
The classic computer and TV format, suited to web pages and video platforms.
- YouTube
- A section of your website
- Product Hunt gallery
- Presentations
How to choose quickly
Start from where the video will be watched most. If you only make one for social media, vertical 9:16 is the most widely promoted; for your website and Product Hunt, keep 16:9.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I crop a 16:9 video to 9:16?
- Yes, but you lose the sides of the frame and text can get cut off. A video composed directly for the format, as Bragr does, works better.
- Which format for LinkedIn?
- Square 1:1 is a safe choice in the feed; vertical also works well on mobile.
- What resolution does Bragr deliver?
- Full HD: 1920 × 1080 in 16:9, 1080 × 1920 in 9:16 and 1080 × 1080 in 1:1.
